On beverages

P1040353The answer to the question “what is this?” would be really different given the origin of the reader answering. A french guy would probably refer to some symbol of our glorious revolution. American readers could refer to the Republican Party, Brits to the Union Jack? (actually I’m curious, could somebody answer those?)… now what would my german readers say? Most probably “Bionade”!

Let aside all the lovely beer one can find here, there are four German drinking wonders that need to be pointed out:

  1. First of all, if you ever ask for a “coca” like… anywhere… you’ll end up with a dumb staring waiter wondering whatever you just asked for. If you want to get a glass of this black, CO2 charged, sweet beverage, you’ll have to ask for a “coLa”… strange… oder?
  2. The second wonder is called “MezzoMix”. This is pretty much a mix between CocaCola and Orangina Fanta Orange (thanks Rolyat). You can order this pretty much anywhere… but only in Germany and Austria. I personally don’t really like that…
  3. Thirdly and that’s the strangest of all : think of a drink, add “schorle” to it and that makes another drink that you can definitely order wherever you are. The waiter will only pour you some of the first thing and add some carbonated water to it… that’s it. And beside making 100 points words for your next Scrabble game, I must admit it’s pretty good… Orangensaftschorle (“saft” = “juice”), Apfelsaftschorle or whaterver-saftschorle, you name it. But what really pisses me off is that they dare make some Weinschorle, you hear me? Kill some nice wine to do some fracking W-E-I-N-S-C-H-O-R-L-E >_< I don’t see beerschorle nowhere now do I? Keep your hands away from our Wine!!!
  4. Now you must start to wonder what the first paragraph was all for, and that would be my last wonder: the Bionade. You know that germans developed an almost national love for eco-bio-friendly-way of life… that would not be complete without the homebrew lemonade that could only be invented here around. The choice of flavors, with elderberry, lychee, herbs and ginger&orange, is definitely strange but believe me, this tastes wonderful and refreshing… I hope it sells at least as good as it tastes!

So, yep, there are still some things to tell you about Germany. I must admit that with all this delicious beer around and when you’ve got the nose right on it, you don’t notice some things anymore… thanks Rolyat for pointing this one out ;]

Manager Kit

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Most of you know it already: last September I took the decision to quit my job and take a new position by Siemens Healthcare. I will stay in the Software Research&Development universe – of course – but will add a pretty big part of team management and software design/architecture to my daily (programming) tasks.

After two months of climax building, I definitely stepped out of the “development house” that hosted me days and nights evenings for the past two years. I came in this morning with 4 cakes, a big smile and a lot of hands to shake. I stepped out this afternoon with my rubber balls & plushes, a couple brownish coffee cups, a sense of leaving something behind and a small-but-wonderful present from my now ex-team. Ulf, the colleague I had most to do with (and the one I had most in common with actually) and I had been joking about it for the past 6 months, he did it: he offered me three “10-faces-dices” to help me make my soon-to-come management decisions :]

So, I guess I’m ready, I can stop swallowing management books, stop trying to find back all my C++ memories and better just concentrate on my dices-throw dexterity. Just kidding ; I have only 3 vacation days and one weekend to reach the third cover of all the books I started, finish a personal feedback of the last two years and start with yoga exercises to be Zen when I finally start next Monday… maybe I’ll manage to insert a few hours of sauna in the middle… we’ll see ;]

Behind the dunes

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Another picture of our summer vacation in France. This was taken on the same evening we walked the “Shore Path” near the Pointe-du-Raz. The weather was gorgeous (the last  sunny day actually) but the water was ice cold. It’s only in the evening that some dark clouds showed up… but it did not rain. We set our tent as close from the dunes as it can be in order to protect it from the heavy wind… and we had a peaceful night. The sunset was gorgeous (picture soon to come :]), almost as nice as the “land sailers ballet” during low tide in the morning!

Bored whispers

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

At night, when the zombies get bored, they stop moaning and start whispering…

Mlle V was out to watch Maria ihm schmeckt nichts with a friend in the movie theater yesterday. I spent my evening playing with my cameras before dozing off in the couch watching MadMen season 2. Wonderful serie bytheway… I’ll have to talk about it one day… but not now.

Anyway, yesterday was picture play evening… so here is one of the results to share with you.

Sacré-Coeur Sunset Acrobatics

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

Yet another picture post. Those pictures were taken this summer in Paris (on Notre-Dame’s day). Beside the cool sunset, the clear view of Paris and the nice company, THE highlight of the moment was really THAT guy!

THAT guy climbed up on a fence, took his teeshirt off and started playing with a football. High perched on a his one square meter stone barrier, he ended up (still playing with his ball) hanging up-side-down from a street lamp, cheered by a crowd of devouring women (nice six packs) and amateur photographers (oh come on, fall down we’re ready).

No… the guy was really good and even exchanged a couple business cards at the end of his show… when he got back down from the street lamp…
